Spring is right around the corner, and it’s time to start making plans. We have compiled a list of local events coming up to help you prepare for this new season.

•Hearts in Harmony Gala

Feb. 29 // Hoover Country Club

The Hoover Service Club’s eighth annual Hearts in Harmony Gala at 6 p.m. will honor Chorus SmartSecure’s Rob Hardman and Steven Splawn. The evening will include a silent auction, dinner and a live auction. Chorus SmartSecure is being honored for its commitment to bringing harmony to people’s homes and businesses through technology. As always, proceeds from the Hearts in Harmony event will benefit the club’s community service and scholarship endeavors.

•Friends of Hoover Library: Hoover’s History with Author Heather Skaggs

March 2 // Hoover Public Library

Local author Heather Skaggs will speak to the Friends of the Hoover Library before the group’s business meeting. Coffee will be served at 9:45 a.m., and the program starts at 10 a.m.

•Hoover’s Arbor Day Celebration

March 7 // Aldridge Gardens

The city’s 22nd annual Arbor Day Celebration for the community will be held from 9:30-11:30 a.m. The event will include a formal ceremony honoring winners of this year’s 4th Grade Arbor Day Essay Contest, free trees for Hoover residents, a ceremonial tree planting, full access to Aldridge Gardens and the Roots gift shop, plus refreshments from local businesses.

St. Patrick’s Day Celebration

March 13 // Hoover Senior Center

Green will be the color du jour at the most festive St. Paddy’s Day celebration this side of Dublin. The event is set to start at 12:30 p.m. Call the center at (205) 739-6700 for more details.

•Mindful Cooking Class

March 24 // St. Vincent’s One Nineteen

Join Registered Dietitian Donna Sibley for a cooking class emphasizing nutrients for brain health, those that affect how you feel in a positive way, in addition to those that can protect against memory loss as we age. You will learn about the importance of balancing specific neurotransmitters and nutrients that benefit the brain. On the menu: blueberry flax bran muffins with coffee, strawberry salad with avocado, walnuts and crispy turmeric chickpeas, salmon topped green bowl with savory lemon sauce, and tuna, egg and avocado toast.
